This is Louis's 6th year as the Head Coach of OCY.

College: 1994 Graduate of the State University of New York at New Paltz

Swimming/Coaching experience:

As a swimmer Coach Lou was a six time Division III NCAA National Champion, winning the 200 and 500 Free his sophomore, junior, and senior years.  He also was a Senior National qualifier in the 200 and 400 Meter Freestyle.  In 1999 Louis was inducted into the SUNY New Paltz Athletic Hall of Fame.

As a coach this is Louis's 15th year working as swim coach. 

The summers of 1993 and 1994 Louis worked as a Coach/Counselor at the Jack Nelson Swim Camp out of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. 

In 1995 Louis took over the Head Coach position at the Northwest CT YMCA.  In the 4 years that Louis was the head Coach the team grew from 45 to 100 swimmers, and during that time the team went from last place (10th) his first year to first place his 4th year in the Yankee Cluster YMCA Swim League.  The one and only time the Northwest YMCA has won their league.

In 1999 Louis moved to Marietta, GA to work as a full time assistant coach with Stingrays Swimming.  During his 3 year with Stingrays he worked with every level of their swim program from developmental swimmers through sectional finalists.

In 2002 Louis took over as head coach of the Ocean County YMCA.  The team has grown from 160 swimmers to 240 swimmer this 6th year.  He has instilled the philosophy of "None of the secrets of success work unless you do!!" or NOTSOSWUYD. While coaching here at OCY Louis has twice been selected to work as a Zone Team coach for New Jersey swimming, once as an assistant and once as Head Coach.  In 2007 the men's team placed 14th at the YMCA National Championships.  Louis also serves on the Board of the Northern NJ YMCA Swim League.

Heidi orpurt has been with OCY for 23 years

Swimming/Coaching Experience:

I grew up swimming competively for the Westfield YMCA for 13 years. Coach of the Tiger Shark "mini" team from 1992-1994. 12U coach from 1994-1999. Team administrator for 2 years. Swimming parent: 22 years!!

What does Heidi like about working at OCY:

Since I also teach swimming to the upper level preschool kids, I really love watching them progress to Zoomers or the red group. Traveling with the National team has been a great experience.I am very proud of the team work they exemplify being together for 7 days. And naturally....it's just plain fun to be part of such a wonderful, healthy, competitive sport!

Jaclyn swam for Toms River East High School,Ocean County Community College, and Kutztown University.

She has been coaching with the Tiger Sharks since fall 2005 and also coached with the OCY Seals and Dolphins Summer League Teams in 2005-2007.

What does Jaclyn like about coaching with OCY?

"That the swimmers are eager and excited and that the parents are involved and helpful."

This is Carly's 5th year with OCY.

Family: Her husband Casey Scallon is the girls swim coach at Toms River East H.S. and her sister Jaclyn is the lead coach of the Red Group. No, they are not twins.

College: Ocean County Community College and the University of Delaware.

Swimming/Coaching experience:

Carly swam in High School for Toms River East and in college for OCC were she swam at NJCAA nationals.

As a coach she is has also been the Head Coach of the OCY Seals and Dolphins summer league teams and the Head Coach of Monsignor Donovan High School.

What does Carly like about coaching with OCY?

"It feels like home because I'm here so often, The swimmers are fun and entertaining, and the coaches are friendly and knowledgeable."

Darren swam for Toms River North High School 1997-2000.  He played Water Polo at Rhode Island.

What does Darren like about coaching with OCY?

"Working with the different ages and expecting the unexpected from the swimmers.  Helping the kids overcome their fears and any obstacles they want to overcome."

Mike is in his 5th year at OCY.

Family: He is happily married with 2 children, 1 grandchild, and 2 dogs

College: Ocean County Community College and Trenton State.

Swimming/Coaching Experience:

Mike swam for 4 years in High School, and spent 4 years as a rescue swimmer in the U.S. Navy.

Prior to his 4 years coaching with us here at OCY he spent 5 years as a coach at Manchester High School.

What does like about coaching with OCY?

"I enjoy working with the kids.  I hope I am a positive influence in a sometimes negayive world.  My two rule are have fun and always do your best in everything that you do."

Dave is in his 6th year at OCY (He started with coach Louis)

Family: Wife Lisa and two daughters Sarah (3) and Dylann (1) 

College: University of Arizona.

Swimming/Coaching Experience:

Dave swam in high school for the Berkley Aquatic Club and Watchung Hills H.S.  Dave was the 1979 National JO Champion in the 200IM and 400 IM.  He held the 11-12 YMCA National age group record in the 200 IM.  At the University of Arizona he was a Team Captain.  In 1983 he finished 8th at Senior Nationals in the 400 IM and was ranked 20th in the world that year.  He participated in the 1984 Olympic Trials.

Before coming to OCY,  Dave  spent 11yrs coaching In Tucson  and  Glendale Arizona, as well as The Atlantic Club in Wall, NJ.

What does dave like about coaching with OCY?

"I love watching our OCY kids grow and learn."


 

Mike Betts

Mike is in his 3rd year at OCY. 

 

Family:  Mike lives with his wife, Jennifer, and their Greyhound.

 

College:  Saint Peter’s College (2001),  Kean University (2003)

 

Swimming/Coaching Experience:  Mike swam for OCY from 1988-1997.  While there Mike was an All American in the 50 free and Junior National Qualifier.  Mike swam for Saint Peter’s College where he was a 4-time MAAC conference champion and 4-year captain.  Mike is currently a Master’s swimmer and holds the NJ state Long Course 50 free record as well as being in the National Top 10 for his age group in several events.

 

Mike was the lead coach of the OCY blue group during the 2003-2004 swim season.  Mike then was the head coach for the boys swim team at North Hunterdon High School from 2004-2006.  

 

What does Mike like about coaching at OCY?:  “I like being part of an organization that assisted me through my youth and being able guide others through their physical and mental journeys as well.”

Ellen swam as an age group swimmer for OCY and the her High School years at the Central Jersey Aquatic Club.  She also swam for Columbia Uiversity.  She currently competes during the summers in lifeguard tournaments for Belmar Beach Patrol.

Family: 3 younger sisters

College: Rutgers University (Undergrad), and Georgian Court (Graduate School)

Swimming/Coaching Experience:

Captain of Toms River North Hischool Swim Team 1998.  And he swam for OCC for 2 years.

As a coach he was an assitant Masters Swim Coach at Rutgers.  He has at one time or another coached every level of the OCY Program.  He is in his second year as a teacher and the Boys Swim Coach at Lacey High School.

What does Brian like about coaching at OCY?

"I enjoy the challenge, seeing long term goals accomplished, and helping the athletes as they grow older.

Family: Sue has two children, Tucker (18) and Amanda (17).  Tucker (OCY ALUM) swims for UNC Wilmington  and Amanda is in Senior 2.

College: Ithaca College

Swimming/Coaching Experience:

Sue swam for the Red Bank YMCA swim team in High School.  She was the Ithica College Swim Team Co-Captain both her Junior and Senior years.  Sue coached with Central Jersey Aquatic Club 1984-1990 and Ithica College Swim Camp 1982-1983.

What does Sue like about coaching with OCY?

"I enjoy working with the children and seeing improvements as the weeks go along.  Swimming is a difficult sport, mentally as well physically, and I find swimmers to be the best kind of athletes."

Sue Kircher has been a certified swim instructor/lifeguard for the OCYMCA for the past year and a half.

 

Family: 

 

5 children, the two youngest were OCY swimmers. Shawn (19) was on the OCY team for two years. He qualified for nationals both years, and this year four of the relays he was in finished in the finals. He is currently competing on the swim team at TCNJ. Scott (15) has been on the OCY team for three years and is currently on senior 1.

 

College: graduate Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing

What does Sue Like about coaching at OCY:

 

I love teaching here at OCY, especially children. I enjoy watching their faces when they are able to accomplish something for the first time. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly they learn and progress in such a short period of time. I am proud to be a part of a team that is so positive toward children.

This is Jen’s second year with OCY.

 

Family: Jen lives with her husband, Coach Mike Betts, and their two greyhounds.

 

College: St. Peter’s College (undergraduate), Kean University (graduate)

 

Swimming/Coaching Experience:

 

Jen began swimming at Rahway YMCA at the age of seven. She also swam for Berkeley Aquatic Club in middle school and Scarlet Aquatic Club in high school. In college, Jen swam for St. Peter’s where she was a MAAC conference finalist. She is currently a Master’s Swimmer for OCY.

 

This is Jen’s second year working with the Blue Group at OCY. She has also coached at the Community Campus in Edison for two years.

 

What does Jen like about coaching at OCY:

 

“It is very rewarding to have the opportunity to coach children in a sport that has been so important to me throughout my life.  The swimmers, parents and fellow coaches at OCY are wonderful to work with.”

This is Denise's first year with OCY

College:  Denise graduated from Montclair State University with a BA in English concentration in Education. She also has a Master's of Educational Counseling from Monmouth University.

Swimming/Coaching Experience: 

She has been coaching swimming for 5 years. She currently coaching at Middletown High school South.  She swam for Toms River HS North and OCC where I got to swim for NJCAA nationals.

Family:  Mom, dad, sisters Dianne and Linda (both married) and two neices: Kayla and Taylor
